Introduction
Although not McLaren’s first road car, the then named MP4-12C Coupe, launched in 2011, was their first ‘mass produced’ (for a McLaren at least) car, whether intentional or not (it probably was) it’s direct rival was the Ferrari 458, a car from a brand that had an established position in the supercar hierarchy on both road and track.
McLaren was a little upstart in comparison, but with one hell of a background in Motorsport. The press loved it, at least on paper it licked the Ferrari on every line, but history and brand image mean more than actual numbers and there are infinitely more 458’s around than 12C’s.
The Spider was always planned from the start, and the carbon tub lends itself perfectly to removing the roof, the mechanism only adds 40 Kg to the overall weight and the spider is tight and shake free.
The spider’s arrival saw the name for both versions change to 12C and it also received all the updates the model went through from the beginning of production which included an increase in power (like that was needed !) to 616 BHP, updates to the Iris navigation and audio system and re-calibration of the steering, suspension and drivetrain.
There doesn’t seem to be exact numbers for deliveries of the 12C from McLaren, but the internet suggests around 3,400 of both coupe and spider were built, of which the UK’s share was around 300 coupes and 100 Spiders, so they’re a rare car from new, and most certainly an even rarer one now.
