Introduction
The E36 was the third generation of the BMW 3 Series, produced between 1990 and 2000.
Initially launched as a 4 Door Saloon, followed by the coupe, convertible, Touring and Compact.
The multi-link rear suspension was a significant upgrade compared to the previous generation, All-wheel drive was not available for the E36, unlike the previous (E30) and successive (E46) generations.
The E36 was named in Car & Driver magazine’s 10 best list for every year it was on sale.
Development of the E36 began in 1981 and the exterior design was heavily influenced by aerodynamics, specifically the overall wedge shape, headlight covers and smaller wing mirrors. The lead designers were Pinky Lai and Boyke Boyer.
Launched in October 1990 with a press release in November and market launch in early 1991. The Convertible and Coupe body styles joined the range in 1993 and the Touring in 1995, as the Touring version of the previous generation (E30) had remained on sale until April 1994 alongside the E36 saloons and coupes.
The E36 chassis was all new, using the “Z-axle” multi link rear suspension proven in the 1989 BMW Z1 and designed with rear toe-in to minimize the oversteering characteristics of the preceding generation.
Available safety equipment included a driver’s airbag, passenger airbag (from 1993 production) and side impact airbags in later models, ABS braking and stability control (“ASC +T”).
Description
Presented in original condition, this example has resided with its second owner for the past 19 years.
Largely unused during his ownership, even more so in recent years, it is delightful to discover not only an original, unmodified E36, but also one that presents with its original factory paintwork.
Now a 26 year old car, it probably doesn’t look much different to when the previous owner bought it at 7 years old !
Some marks are evident as you would expect given its originality, age and mileage, but this car has enjoyed a sheltered life, in the preceding 16 years its covered just 1,800 Miles.
We have now extensively recommissioned the car, along with all the expected service items and fluids it is now ready to be enjoyed with 4 new tyres, new brakes all round and extensive detailing of both the original factory paintwork and interior.
